The president Joe Biden on Friday is scheduled to visit a Southern California communications firm anticipated to gain from his push for legislation to boost American semiconductor manufacturing and he’s also taking an unpopular Democratic congressman along with him.
Biden will be joined by Rep. Mike Levin for the visit to Carlsbad-headquartered Viasat as he looks to highlight the CHIPS and Science Act, a $280 billion legislative package, ahead of Tuesday’s midterm elections. The bill is among the Biden administration’s biggest legislative accomplishments.
Levin is an incumbent congressman who represents an area in San Diego which was at one time considered a GOP home, now in a tense race against the former San Juan Capistrano Mayor Brian Maryott. Biden was the main speaker at a rally on Thursday evening held in Oceanside, California, for Levin.
Coronavirus pandemic supply disruptions and the absence of American manufacturing of chips hindered Viasat which is dependent on such components to deliver its services to industrial customers as well as for the U.S. military. Biden will use this event to emphasize how the CHIPS legislation will aid companies such as Viasat decrease their dependence on chip makers from overseas as per the White House.
On Friday, Biden will head to Chicago for an event for political leaders. Biden is headed to the Democratic stronghold amid indications that certain House members from suburban Chicago districts could face more difficult contests for reelection.
The Congressional Leadership Fund, a super-political action committee also known as a super-PAC that is aligned to the GOP House leadership, this week announced the purchase of a $1.8 million ad campaign that targets Democratic Rep. Sean Casten who is a member of the district that Biden took by 11 percent in the year 2020. Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California is the House majority leader will be running alongside GOP candidate Keith Pekau in the district on Friday.
