Who is Whoopi Goldberg, Whoopi Goldberg is an American comedian, actress, author, talk show host, singer-songwriter, and political activist and is one of the few entertainers who have won a Grammy, Oscar, Emmy, and Tony award (EGOT). Caryn Elaine Johnson( her original name) was born in Manhattan, New York City to Robert James Johnson Jr, who was a Baptist clergyman, and Emma Johnson, who was a nurse and teacher. She was then raised in the public housing project at Chelsea-Elliot Houses. She went to Washington Irving High School but dropped it further.

Whoopi was her stage forename and was taken from a whoopee cushion. She was further trained under acting teacher Uta Hagen at the HB Studio in New York City. Her debut appearance onscreen was in Citizen: I’m Not Losing My Mind, I’m Giving It Away (1982), an avant-garde ensemble feature by San Francisco filmmaker William Farley.

Later she came to national prominence with her one-woman show in which she portrayed Moms Mabley and then further created The Spook Show, a one-woman show composed of different character monologues in 1983.

Goldberg’s Broadway performance caught the eye of director Steven Spielberg while she performed in The Belly Room at The Comedy Store and he gave her the lead role in his film The Colour Purple, based on the novel by Alice Walker. The film was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, including a nomination for Goldberg as Best Actress.
