Who is Toni Ko?
Toni Ko was born in 1973 in Daegu, South Korea. Around 1986, when she was in her early teenage years, her family immigrated to the United States. Toni Ko spent most of her teenage years working for her parents who were in the cosmetics industry. Even Though she attended Glendale Community College she dropped out to work for her parents full-time.
Who is the owner of Nyx Cosmetics?
In 1999, Toni Ko founded her dream brand NYX Cosmetics with $250,000 in startup money from her mother. The company hit the charts and earned $4 million in its first year. She named the brand after the Greek goddess Nyx. With her hard work and perseverance, she built the company into the mainstream and offered a set of affordable but high-quality makeup products. In 2014 after 14 years she sold the company to L’Oréal for an estimated $500 million. The sale was clean and sudden, which meant that Ko had no earn-out or time to adjust–just a payout and a void.
Because of a non-compete clause with L’Oréal, she could not launch another cosmetics company. In March 2016, Ko returned to her business and created the Perverse Sunglasses company, launching as a sponsor of Coachella. The company later changed its name to Thomas James LA. Ko later sold the company.
She also is the founder and current CEO of Butter Ventures, a principal venture firm that invests in start-ups, especially those created by women.
Toni Ko also launched a new cosmetics-focused company, Bespoke Beauty Brands (BBB), which would launch brands in cooperation with various celebrities and social media influencers.
