Single Drunk Female- Plot
The series tells the story of Sam, a girl in her late 20s, who has to confront her drinking problem. It delves into her life when she has to leave her amazing media job In New York, because of the fight she has with her boss after being drunk.
She has to now move back home with her mother who also seems to have a problem. After a horrific drunken evening, Samantha finds herself on probation and having to be forced to get back her life. Despite being accused of reckless assault, she somehow doesn’t get prison time. She’s ordered to go to rehabilitation and stay sober while she’s on probation.
After completing her rehab, everything in her messy life gets even more complicated. She comes to know that her former best friend Brit (Sasha Compère) is engaged to her boyfriend (Charlie Hall). Samantha is then forced to take a job at a grocery store while figuring out what she wants in her professional and personal life. Amidst all these personal problems, she has to deal with these things without drugs or alcohol.
Single Drunk Female focuses wholly on Samantha and her small problems in her small life. This portrayal is what makes it feel so authentic and relatable. The most interesting and appreciable part of the show is that it’s not trying to sugarcoat Samantha’s alcoholism. She’s certainly not shown as a sympathetic figure in the show’s first couple of episodes. The only reason why she’s sober is that she’d go to jail otherwise and she seems to be fighting sobriety every step of the way. At the end of the show, we can see she is trying so hard to rebuild her life and gain back her trust.
So far, it’s rated as the best new show of the year. On Rotten Tomatoes, it currently boasts a 100% Fresh rating among the critics. Inkoo Kang of The Washington Post called it “instantly charming and dense with talent,” and “refreshingly free of didacticism.”
