“We have demonstrated that the digital economy can significantly support the traditional economic system.” Two examples of the positive impact of the internet economy on the traditional economy are the contribution of the digital economy to Nigeria’s gross domestic product (GDP) and its ability to make the economy more resilient to adverse events such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
It is important, because Nigeria is developing into a nation that will be considered one of the top digital economies in the future.
“This is President Muhammadu Buhari’s desire that all the agencies of the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy, the private sector and stakeholder firms work towards Nigeria’s digital economy.”
He stated that Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI), are the key enablers to achieving some, if any, of the SDGs like ending hunger through Agrictech, eliminating poverty through ICT, and good health, among others.
Governor Seyi Makinde responded by Mrs Olubamiwo Adeosun (Secretary to the State Government) revealing that his administration knew that ICT was crucial to its progress and impact since its inception in 2019.
He said that his administration knew that investing in the digital economy was crucial to expanding the state’s economy. This is why it has created policies and a framework for ICT by digitizing all state processes.
Makinde stated that his administration would consider what could be done to create a ministry for digital economy as requested by the minister because ICT is clearly the future.
