On New Year’s Day U.S. Winter Storm Warning, The expected snowfall and winter storm on New Year’s day is likely to cause ‘travel disruptions’ in the US. The Weather Prediction Centre (WPC) of the National Weather Service (NWS) warned Friday that there are chances of a winter storm in and around New York, over the Central Plains to the Great Lakes Area.
It is expected that there may be snowfall of more than six to eight inches in some parts and thus it is expected to cause widespread hazardous travel conditions.
It is forecasted that a “significant winter storm” is expected to develop over the southern Plains region on Friday before heading to the Great Lakes on January 1. The National Weather Service warned that, As a result of this storm, some areas have chances of severe thunderstorms, flash flooding, heavy snow, ice, and bitterly cold conditions.
The Winter Storm Warning will go into effect from 6 AM Saturday on January 1 st, lasting until midnight on Sunday for much of the Quad-City Area. Travel-halting snowfall is expected in at least 18 states in the center of the country, according to AccuWeather meteorologists.

The weather prediction center warned that the snow and ice are expected to cause “widespread travel disruptions” on New Year’s Day.
If the snowfall rates are reaching the rate of one inch per hour, the condition is dismal as there will be a significant amount of accumulation. According to WPC, there is also the chance of significant mixed precipitation of freezing rain and sleet on the southern side of areas of heavy snow. It is expected that in these southern areas the ice accumulations can cross 0.10 inches.
In the portions of central Missouri, namely Mexico, Columbia, Fulton, Versailles, California, Jefferson City, there are chances of accumulations of about a quarter-inch of sleet. Considerable snowfall is expected in central Missouri. The heaviest snowfall does appear to be in northern Missouri/southern Iowa where they will experience less sleet and ice. It should be noted that in central Missouri the snowfall is expected on top of any icing. Use extra caution on outdoor surfaces.
The national weather body says that the Heavy downfall has chances of creating flash flooding across the Mississippi and Ohio River Valleys. The residents of river valleys are expected to be alert for the same. The heavy storm system in the Plains will lay severe weather havocs from northern Texas to the southern Appalachians on new years eve.
The areas of the Western U.S., including pockets of northern California, Oregon, Washington state, Colorado, Arizona, Idaho, Utah, and New Mexico, Have been issued with winter storm warnings and bad weather advisories.
There are moderate to heavy chances of snow throughout much of the Intermountain West as the storm heads towards the Great Basin area. This is because as per the Weather Prediction Centre, the US continent is subjected to prolonged troughing in the Western intermountain’s and ridging in the Southeast.
The pressure system developing off the coast of California will continue to send the moisture from the Pacific ocean into the coasts of southern California and the Southwest continent on Friday.
By Saturday, one to two feet of snow is expected in the Cascades, Sawtooth, and Wasatch mountain ranges as well as central and southern Rockies, with totals climbing above three feet in the highest elevations of Utah and Colorado, the WPC said Friday.
Sub-zero temperatures are expected from the Upper Mississippi Valley to the northern Rockies region, as Arctic air causes temperatures to drop throughout the Plains on Friday and into the morning of New Year’s Day.
Wind Chill Warnings and Advisories remain in place for the far North-Central U.S. region through January 1, the WPC said. Sunday will see “bitterly cold temperatures” across the area from the Central Plains to the Great Lakes region, with wind chills hitting nearly below zero.
The warm side of the front spreads across the southeast region. The region will experience”abnormally warm and humid conditions,” with considerably milder conditions spreading as far north as the northeast by January 1.
Several record high temperatures are forecast from the Gulf Coast to the northern Mid-Atlantic region through the morning of New Year’s Day, according to the WPC.
Travel Disruptions
The bad weather conditions might result in slippery road conditions throughout the Plains states. It is important to note that the weather disruptions are largely beginning as rain and freezing rain. it is going to wash away most pretreatment on the roads. Be cautious on roads in winter weather and be sensible enough to drive slowly. leave plenty of room between vehicles. remember that bridges freeze first and be extra cautious while using them.
Flight delays and cancellations are expected throughout the country as planes are grounded for the wind storm. More than 1,000 flights have already been canceled around the US as of Friday morning.
