Another 36 Chinese companies will be added to the US Entity List as soon as next week. This will severely restrict their access to US technology components and technology.

Bloomberg reports that a source familiar with the matter stated that the Biden administration plans to release the final list of companies shortly. Yangtze Memory Technologies, (YMTC) is the only confirmed company.

This company was previously slated to supply Apple with 128-layer 3DNAND flash memory. Apple decided that relying solely on YMTC was too risky and this decision appears to have been a wise one.

YMTC was already listed on the US government’s Unverified list, which means that no design, technology, specifications, or documents can ever be shared with the company. In October, all American employees were asked to leave by the memory manufacturer.

The Chinese government appears to have been working with US authorities since October to stop YMTC from being added to the Punitive Entity List. However, it seems that this cooperation was ultimately unsuccessful.

A special export license must be obtained from the US Department of Commerce by a Chinese company once it is on the Entity list. American companies cannot sell or ship certain components to China without it.

Eight Chinese quantum computing organizations were added to the list last year after it was discovered that China could use their technology in military applications.
