Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko were at first involved in the show. The show was first announced in September of 2018 when Netflix announced that it was planning for a “reimagined” live-action version of the 2005 series. At that time, Avatar The Last Airbender‘s original creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko were declared as the project’s executive producers and showrunners. But by 2020, situations changed.
DiMartino revealed the news in an open note to his fans. He declared that he and Bryan Konietzko were stepping away from the declared Avatar The Last Airbender project. The reason behind the departure is still not clear. but it is assumed that creative differences were the cause of it. The creator duo described their time with the studio as a “negative and unsupportive” environment. But even though the makers of Avatar The Last Airbender have left this one, Netflix has decided to move on.
In August, Albert Kim, who had worked on famous shows like Sleepy Hollow and Nikita, stepped into the role of director. He revealed about this in a post that he was initially unwilling to take on the project. He, at last, decided to accept the offer for three reasons: the VFX technology would let him bring this world to life, Netflix’s format would let him tell the story as an ongoing serialized narrative, and because the series is an opportunity to showcase “Asian and Indigenous characters as living, breathing people.”
In addition to Albert Kim, Dan Lin, Lindsey Liberatore, Michael Goi, and Roseanne Liang will be the series’ executive producers.
