Neil deGrasse Tyson, on an episode on Real Time with Bill Maher revealed: “There’s a reaction to nukes that’s slightly too much in comparison to what they actually do.”
The HBO programme, Maher began the segment by expressing his concern about radiation from nuclear weapons in the context of Putin as well as Russia and the Russia-Ukraine War. “I am a huge fan of Ukraine however, do I love them enough that I am exposed to radiation?” he said.

Modern Nukes aren’t the way we imagine them to be.
Neil deGrasse Tyson quickly responded to the question, saying that “…modern nukes don’t have the radiation issue just to be unambiguous.”
Bill Maher seemed relieved by the revelations and Neil deGrasse Tyson further elaborated: “You still blow to the smithereens”. The modern nukes represent a completely different type of weapon than the ones that were used for Hiroshima or Nagasaki.
“Nuclear weapons, if they explode don’t cause radiation issues?” the host asked.
“Not if it’s Hydrogen bombs, No,” Tyson confirmed.
Bill later went on to say that he didn’t worry about the possibility of being vaporized or torn to shreds by nuclear weapons and seemed content: “This is news to me, which is the reason why it’s so great for a scientist to be around.”
Maher explained his concerns about a radiation issue due to an exchange in the local area of nuclear weapons from nations. “Now you’re saying that isn’t a concern?” Maher asked.
Neil deGrasse Tyson responded, admitting that it “would be the situation” If “fission” weapons were employed.
When he heard that, the talk show host’s joy quickly vanished and the segment concluded with a hilarious, “oh for f* sakes!”
