NASA HiRISE camera captures one of the most powerful channels for outflow on Mars

This image from NASA’s HiRISE camera, which is onboard its Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) depicts Kasei Valles – a massive outlet channel on Mars that measures a staggering 1580 kilometers (982 miles) in length, and as high as 482 kilometers (300 miles) in width at certain places that makes Kasei Valles one of the most recognized outflow routes in Mars.

Red Planet. To put it in perspective, it’s bigger than the Grand Canyon in Arizona, that’s only 446 kilometers (277 miles) long and 29 kilometers (18 miles) wide.

Another mass murder in the US

It is believed that the Kasei Valles canal system runs eastwards through into the Lunae Planum region and eventually flows into Chryse Planitia. It is believed that it was developed through the combination of water and lava erosion, however it’s not certain whether the water was at the Martian surface in liquid form or in the form of frozen.

Since its inception, Kasei Valles has undergone many changes like collisions that have left craters that are now covered in dust, sand along with fine gravel. The changes can be seen in the rippled texture that is found in the channels.

Scientists are studying Kasei Valles, as they believe that the area was the site of a huge lake, and that indications of microbial life might be present.

The lake’s water could have created an ideal environment for living things even if it never existed on Mars in the first place, and to develop. NASA’s Perseverance Rover is currently exploring Jezero Crater in the vicinity of Kasei Valles, searching for evidence of ancient microbial life within the region.
